I’ve always been a list maker. I have a list for everything: shopping, groceries, dreams, businesses to someday start, weird (still legal) ways to make money, and most commonly, my To-Dos. On a good week, my lists remind me of how much I accomplish. On the other hand, they can remind me how much I got myself into, how little time I have and how easily I get distracted with other things.
Alas, last week I came across a blog that will hopefully be instrumental in changing my To Do lists for the rest of my life. The gist of the blog is to write EVERYTHING down – important or insignificant, if you’re thinking it, write it. After you do this, I would suggest taking a few deep breaths or a few sips of wine. The key to making this list better is to comb through it and highlight what’s urgent. I put “due dates” next to my orange highlighted items. It helps me to schedule and work constructively. Then, find the important items and highlight them with a different color. There is a fine difference between urgent and important but your criteria for that may fluctuate. When in doubt, make it urgent and put a due date next to it so you’re prepared.
Here’s a look at mine:
Since I have a wide array of things going on, I separated mine into different categories (Freelance, Girls Hope, Fitness, Chores, Writing). Everything that was a bit more random fell under Other. When I look at my list, it looks ridiculous – who has this much stuff to do? But when I look at the orange, it’s not so bad. When I look at the pink, again not too bad.
The most important take-away from this is that To Do lists should be prioritized, they should make life simple. If you’re like me and you’re trying to accomplish a whole lot in not a lot of time, try this! Good luck and let me know how it goes!
